Cheers to 55 years of the Parrot Lounge
It all began in 1970, when the door to The Parrot Lounge first opened. Tim and Joe, the co-owners of The Parrot Lounge, both originally from the Philadelphia area, came down to Fort Lauderdale in search of sunshine and good times. They started as cleaners and barbacks in the beachside bar, worked their way up, and eventually bought the place. Along the way, Joe met his wife and had John, who, like his father, began his bar career just slightly earlier (at the age of ten), sweeping up after Eagles games before earning his own place behind the bar and, eventually, as an owner. What sets The Parrot Lounge apart is its crowd and the fact that, despite the city's tremendous growth around it, it remains a true neighborhood bar. On game days, 200–400 people show up, including a mix of former players, Fox Sports (which records a podcast out of the bar), and enthusiastic fans cheering on the Eagles, Phillies, or Florida Panthers. The staff don’t just pour drinks; they cheer just as loud, if not louder, than the patrons. They also host a monthly beach clean-up. And from dog adoption events every last Friday of the month to fundraisers whenever someone could use an extra hand, they’re always giving back to the community. The Parrot Lounge’s welcoming vibe - the kind where the staff know your name before your second round - paired with its vintage charm and no-frills approach to fun, offers a piece of old-school Fort Lauderdale that keeps people coming back. After fifty-five years, one thing’s clear: the heart of The Parrot Lounge isn’t just the bar itself, it’s the staff behind it.
